As the year comes to a close and the scent of cinnamon and cloves drift through the air, it’s a wonderful time for reflection. What were some of your best moments and days this year? Taking some time out from the hustle and bustle of the holidays to think about what’s working well and what next year could bring can really start things off right. <strong>“The life that I have chosen gives me my full hours of enjoyment.”</strong> - Winslow Homer What truly delights you? Here is an important question to ponder. What small things can you do to bring more delight into your life this coming year? This isn’t an exercise in making resolutions that will soon be forgotten. This is about taking a little time to think about what rejuvenates and restores you, about what makes you happy. When you bring awareness to the forefront and repeat the same question, your brain and heart continue to work on the answers even when you’re not consciously aware of it. A great way to remember to ask yourself this question or any other is to write it on a piece of paper or post it note and put it in a couple of places so you’ll see it throughout the day. Also keep some paper or a journal handy to write down answers as they come to you. You know when you are in the shower or driving and suddenly you get an insight or idea that seems to just “pop” into your head? That’s your subconscious at work. Sometimes the answers may surprise you. I know I’ve fallen into the trap many times of thinking I’ll be happy when this or that happens or if I could just get this or that done, things would be better. But the truth of the matter is things can be better now. You can work on your goals and aspirations without sacrificing today for tomorrow. <strong>Give Thanks Every Day Open Your Life in Wonderful and Unexpected Ways</strong> We tend to think of life as the big events like weddings, births, moving, and new jobs. But it is so much more. Each day and every moment contributes to the whole of your life. Being grateful for the little things and little moments every day can make a big difference in our overall outlook and attitude. <strong>“Gratitude helps you to grow and expand. Gratitude brings joy and laughter into your lives and into the lives of all those around you.”</strong> - Eileen Caddy Sara Ban Breathnach, author of Simple Abundance shared that “life had become an out-of- body experience for me. The more I focused on lack, the more depressed and worried I became; the more depressed and worried I’d wake up, the more I focused on what was lacking in my life all day.” She decided she needed to sit down and write at least 100 reasons for being grateful for her life exactly as it was at that moment. She was humbled by how very rich in blessings her life really was. After that, she began to keep a gratitude journal, writing down five small things she was grateful for each day. She became a completely different woman. After two months, she began to write Simple Abundance which has sold over 7 million copies in the United States alone. If you begin to notice and express gratitude for 5 small things a day, will you become a best selling author or rise to the top of your field? Maybe not but what is likely to happen is you’ll have a shift in attitude. You’ll realized how blessed you are, that life is fundamentally good, and that there is hope. So, as you sit down to enjoy a Thanksgiving feast this year, savor the moments and notice some of the details; the sound of a loved one laughing, the scent of cloves and cinnamon in the pumpkin pie, the feel of your favorite sweater on your skin. And try to continue giving thanks every day for all those little things. It might just make a big difference. Take Time For What You Love

<strong>Take Time For What You Love</strong> Have you missed out on the opportunity to take time for what you love because you were busy doing things that don’t really matter? I read a Dilbert cartoon the other day from a book called Dilbert Gives You the Business by Scott Adams that was a great lesson on spending your time wisely. Dilbert’s boss tells him he is being sent to Elbonia to teach a class in COBOL computer programming. Dilbert says he doesn’t know anything about COBOL. After several more frames of the boss trying to solve the wrong problem, Dilbert lands in Elbonia. The Elbonians tell him they don’t have any computers, to which he replies, “That’s ok. I don’t know COBOL.” He then proceeds to give them a four day class. “The time which we have at our disposal every day is elastic; the passions we feel expand it, those that we inspire contract it, and habit fills up what remains.” – Marcel Proust In this day and age, where we constantly have more to do than is humanly possible, it pays to stop and look at where you spend your time. There are so many things that demand our attention: our jobs, families, and other responsibilities. Even though it may not feel like it, there is always some time that you get to make choices about how you’ll spend it. You owe it to yourself to spend some time on things that really matter to you. It could be a creative dream such as writing a fictional adventure, learning to play the guitar, or planting a beautiful garden. Here is the hard part. If you wait until everything is cleaned, cooked, filed, delivered, rotated, or in perfect order, you may not have the energy, desire, or inspiration to do anything. Even if by a miracle you find yourself with an hour or two of “free” time, you may find yourself starting at the blank page or frustrated that you can’t decide what to do. I have a strong desire to see my in basket empty, my house clean and stack free, and a week’s worth of sumptuous meals ready to be whisked to the table set with linens and handmade fused glass dishes that I’ve made myself. Perhaps I should write fiction with this kind of imagination. So the answer is you can’t wait. When I do, I feel frustrated and grumpy. I feel like there is never enough time. I wonder when it will be legal to clone myself. I mutter that I never get to do what I want to do. Sound familiar? Setting aside a little time, preferably each day, to do the things that matter to you, will ease the frustration and get you moving in the right direction. You’ve been given the gift of time. Creative Choices <strong>Do you wish you had more money or time?</strong> Is it possible to make creative choices and begin to shape your days into the life you wish you could have? Yes! Your life is a series of choices you get to make. If you look at the heart of what you want and what it would mean to you, you might find there are more ways to get the essence of what you desire. <strong>What does it mean to you?</strong> Maybe you feel like if you had more money or time your life would be complete. You could take a closer look to define what having more money means to you. Would it mean freedom? Freedom to work at a different career, freedom to travel or peace of mind? Would it give you a sense of value or self esteem? Would it give you more time with your kids, spouse, or friends? <strong>How could you start to get the benefits now?</strong> If you want to spend more time with your family, you might declare Friday nights as family night where you take turns choosing the activity or make it movie night, complete with popcorn. Or could you give up TV for an evening and just talk, play games, or work on a project together? If you want more time for a creative pursuit, you might take a half hour before everyone gets up or a half hour before dinner each night to work a little at a time on it. Maybe you’d just like more time. I needed help with lots of the little details of my business and personal life that seemed to be piling up. I wanted to make sure I still have time to relax and that I’m not always having to do something. So I recently placed an ad in Craig’s list and hired an awesome personal assistant. She is able to help me a few hours a week and it’s wonderful. Do you want to travel more but can’t afford it? What could you give up that doesn’t give you as much satisfaction? Or better yet, brainstorm some ways you could be paid to travel. <strong>What is the essence of your desires?</strong> If you begin to look at why you want something, you may discover that you can make creative and positive choices that will give you the essence of what you want. What else could you do to create those outcomes and enjoy the benefits now? <strong>Reflect on your choices</strong> The end of the year is always a great time to reflect on the choices you made this year. What were some of the best moments? What do you wish you had more time for? What creative choices can you make for next year? <strong> New Year New Perspective An Easier Way to Set Goals</strong> As we enter a new year, in our area, the ground is covered with white, sparkling snow like a blank canvas, fresh and full of possibilities. It can be exciting and overwhelming. How are you starting off the new year? As you set goals, are you making a giant to do list that would be intimidating for someone running their own country? Are you vowing to do better than last year? Or are you feeling bad that you haven’t made new promises yet that you’re afraid you won’t be able to keep? What if one of your main aspirations this year could be to simply enjoy your life more? <strong>“The future is something which everyone reaches at the rate of sixty minutes an hour, whatever he does, whoever his is.”</strong> - C.S. Lewis With a slight change of perspective, it is possible. Think about each area of your life such as relationships, finances, career or business, mind, body, spirit, fun and recreation. Try to write down at least one thing that would make it more enjoyable and more satisfying. How could you make it easier? The best part is it could be something very simple. Here a just a few possibilities. What if you devoted an hour or two a week to a dream or goal you’ve wanted to do for a long time but haven’t found a block of time to accomplish it? What if you let go of the pressure of having a certain outcome or deadline? What if you were trying to cut down on coffee or sodas and you add a glass of water in between each cup? What if you shared a chore with a friend? My sister and I did this with some of our clutter and it was a huge help! What if you gave yourself mini rewards to recognize your efforts? What if you got in the habit of asking yourself how you could make something more satisfying and easier before doing it? You may come up with some great answers and even better a habit of enjoying life more.
