Clearing Clutter to Make Room for Your Life

There are stacks and piles of books, notebooks, articles, and papers.
There are ideas worth pursuing, and things with potential mingling with duplicate and useless information.
There are so many wonderful things I want to get started on but I recognize the toll that this clutter takes on me.
It is a cruel and constant reminder of things I haven’t done yet.
It robs me of how I would prefer to feel when I walk in the room.
It brings up a few very interesting points and some good lessons.
How much is enough?
It is exhausting and yet helpful to sort all this information so I can get a better view of what I really have.
Whether it is information, art or craft supplies, collections of any kind when you take the time to see what you have, you will start to see patterns.
It may be that you are holding on to things that you know you’ll never use but it also keeps you from doing what you want.
You may find that you have lots of a certain thing….it may be lots of variations of the same thing. So what does that tell you?
How much time, money, and space do you want to spend on the stuff?
The truth is I don’t think I’ll ever be the person who only has 3 books on the shelf, and 1 shoebox of jewelry supplies, art supplies, paper, and sewing supplies.
But I am also not willing to spend so much time shuffling stuff around that I’m not actually using it but just moving it. And it creates the feeling that there is not enough time to do the things I want.
What Can You Eliminate?
Will you really use it or refer to it again?
I’ve got books on the shelf that I’ve read but I haven’t referred to it for the last 5 years, maybe…… just maybe I can get rid of it.
Can you find it somewhere else easily?
In many cases, it is so much easier to search something online than to find it among your stacks.
Next time, I’ll share some ideas of what to do with the stuff you keep.

Boy, can I relate. I tend to collect paper and books. Paper is the worst for me. I can and do eventually part with books that were maybe beneficial to me for a season, although it is still hard for me to do since I adore books and have for nearly my whole life.
Now paper, as near as I can tell, reproduces itself when I’m not looking. I never remember printing out everything I have stacked up, but there it is, taking up too much of my physical space, as well as my psychic space. When I am able to part with paper, I feel so much lighter and freer, it’s a wonder I don’t do it more often, but I suppose I must get something out of being cluttered, even though intellectually, I haven’t figured it out.

It is true that we do get something out of keeping the clutter. It can be fear and resistance as well as habits that get in our way. I’m recognizing the fact that “my filter got clogged” and I allowed too much in than I have the time or energy to deal with. Time for a new filter!
